Alternative Assignments

Dear students,

I want you to have the chance to listen to something in English during the days we won´t have classes. I came across this guy and his rules for learning English. Watch and listen to three of his videos and comment on whether you agree or diasgree on the rules he recommends. Be critical! Give your personal views or examples based on your personal experience in learning English.

Rule No. 1: Learn complete phrases not isolated words
Rule No. 2: Do not study grammar rules
Rule No. 3: Learn with your ears not with your eyes

  1. HI ,

Well, I read all the activities and I have liked more the alternative assigments. So, here are my comments on the rules:

    1. On the rule about not learning isolated words but whole phrases, it's hard to say that we don't do that in our classes in the CELE. I mean, we spent practicing the use of phrases in specific situations. Rarely we see isolated words.
So, in summary, I agree with the first rule, but I think there is non novum sub sole.

    2. About the second rule, I think the important is to identify wich is the goal we seek. In the video it is accepted, indeed, that if we want to write, study grammar books is good. But if we want to talk, it serves very little.
At least in my case the experience confirms the case. I could get in the CELE after several years of not studying english because we have so long to resolve the placement exam and to think the answers that it was difficult not to be in an advanced course. However, when I try to talk, I forget all the grammar. So, I have to practice more the speech, not the book excersises.

    3. Finally, the last rule is only the application to the case of learning English, of something very important: To understand any sentence, it must be shaked to hear what it sounds inside. That's why there are so many deficiences in reading comprehension, not only in English but in the mother language, because often only the view is passed on the letters without to take meaning what is wrapped in words. Finally, the eyes are only the vehicle to sound in our mind the words written.

    Bye.

  2. I already listened to this guy and I agree with him because at least for me learn phrases is much easier than just one word that maybe later I´ll not even know how to use it.
And about not study grammar rules, is something that I don’t like, sometimes I get really confused about it, I prefer learn it more naturally even when I made mistakes a lot of times.
I agree again with the guy, that’s why I always listen music, but I think writing is important too because it helps to improve your comprehension in text books and improve your writing in general.

  3. Well, I think this rules are very interesting I don't know if they really work but I think I can put them in practice, maybe they can be useful for me. Obviously I'm not going to burn my grammar book but I can learn phrases instead of words, and I already listen a lot of things in english, I'm trying to watch all my favorites series in english and I can say that this activity is really helpful. Finally, I'd like to add other useful tools like internet that has a lot of activities that can help you to improve your english.

  4. About the first rule….
For me it wasn’t a rule it was an advice and I appreciated. Since I heard it I began to practice the new words in a phrase, instead to learn the word and its meaning. I found it practical and It isn't difficult.
I’m not sure I’m going to write in a notebook the phrases, but at least I’m going to change the strategy to learn new words.
    The second rule…
It makes me remember the “Quick learning” phrase… :)
I like it very much but I’m not sure that if I don’t study the rule I can improve the grammar so easy. I try to write and read in English but I think it is enough for me. But one thing that is true, if you are not shy of how you use the rules and you began to express yourself avoiding the idea to be wrong, the practice can help you to understand better the grammar.
    Third rule…
I agree with the idea of listening but I also think that is very important to look of the context of the words. It’s true that if you listen the sounds of a language you can learn them, but you also need to know what it means and where you can to use the phrases. I mean, you can sing a song in a perfect English but you couldn’t know what it means and for a baby is ok but not for all.

    About the method...
Maybe this rules are part of a new paradigm to learn English and of course it seems easy, so it make us feel not confident to the method, but it can be useful for the people who learn easily in a practical way without the support of the conceptual formalisms.
